New specialty in the shipping industry “Marine Automation Engineer”

Mr. Stratos Karounias, General Manager of C&A STAVROS KASSIDIARIS S.A., discusses the importance of maritime automation and the need to establish the new specialty of maritime automation technician in an interview given to the program “Industry Hour” on the TpressWEBTV online channel.

“A ship is more than just a large and complex factory. It consists of dozens of automated systems, such as power generation and management, navigation and steering systems, engine control, cargo stabilization, safety systems, emissions control systems, and more. All of these must operate flawlessly to ensure the smooth functioning of the vessel. With the maritime industry adapting to new technologies and implementing advanced systems, it is now possible to predict potential malfunctions, something especially important, as it can prevent damage and delays that would otherwise come at a significant financial cost,” emphasizes Mr. Stratos Karounias.

Autonomous ships are indeed the next major milestone for the maritime industry. However, in order for this vision to become a reality, significant progress must be made in designing highly reliable systems—a transition that could take up to 20 years of continuous research and development.
“A modern or autonomous vessel also requires the introduction of new specialized roles, such as that of the maritime automation technician, which is essential for ensuring optimal operation,” added Mr. Karounias.
“We congratulate the Public IEK of Aigaleo for taking the initiative to introduce this new specialty, and we remain strong supporters of the effort to train the next generation of maritime automation experts.”

S.Kassidaris: We are advocates of development and implementation of new practices

Mr. Stavros Kassidaris, CEO of C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. spoke to the magazine NAFS, November 2020, about the company’s participation in luxury and pioneering shipbuilding, the “secret” of its rapid development, its advanced and radical services and its multi-faceted policy.

Nafs: This is not the first time that C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. has been selected by huge shipping companies to help completing the construction of luxury and pioneering shipbuilding. Really, what is the recipe that has established and consolidated you at the top?

S.K.: The recent example of the design, construction and installation of the Main and Emergency Switchboard in a new Mega Yacht – a jewel of a well-known company by C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. makes our company very proud. Such projects require no particular recipe but high know-how, collaborations with reliable material makers such as HYUNDAI ELECTRIC, SIEMENS, SELCO and RITTAL, concentration, immediate processing of claims and 42 years of experience in shipbuilding.

Nafs: It is true that C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. has experienced significant and rapid growth in the recent years. How important and crucial is it to have the infrastructure and the right people with the right experience to ensure that you continue along this path and meet your ambitious goals?

S.K.: Every professional step every critical decision in the maritime arena is determined by many elements of a group of hard working, bold and accountable to their obligations employees. These features are the foundations of our company which gain the trust of our partners and develop the business. The selection of highly qualified professionals in their field, their continuing training and upgrading of the know-how of our engineers in particular are the cornerstone of C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. Any ambitious future can only be based on the unquestionable academic knowledge and experience of all staff who are increasingly enriched. The company’s premises provide staff with the appropriate infrastructure with modern machinery and equipment, while ensuring a safe and pleasant working environment as a reward for their important services.

Nafs: Your company was one of the first to take action against the pandemic in the workplace thus showing how much it calculates the human factor. What does your workforce and staff mean to you and how do you support your people?

S.K.: In these difficult times we are going through with the unprecedented spread of the coronavirus, we have been called upon to take measures to protect the health of our employees and consequently of our customers and associates in a timely manner. Teleworking, interrupting personal contacts with customers and partners at both business meetings in our offices and visits to our shop, promoting orders by e-shop, telephone and email as well as encouraging payments via web banking were some of the preventive measures that we have already taken since the first wave of the pandemic last March. Now, with the possibility of another lockdown before the gates, we are actively reintroducing these measures along with the mandatory use of the mask. It is worth mentioning that our company provided free of charge the test for the detection of coronovirus for all staff after the return from summer leave and continues to provide it after the return of techniques from missions abroad, providing everyone with a healthy working environment.

For us at C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. the good mental health and well-being of the employees plays a key-role in the development of the company. This is why we are making sure that the environment in which we are all moving is pleasant, friendly and meritocratic. We pursue the individual development of our staff and encourage individual initiative. We provide wellness seminars, workshop techniques and safe work training programmes with certificates etc. Workers in the technical department, which is a pillar of our development, have the full support of the company both in terms of continuing training through educational programmes and in terms of extra private health insurance, including Covid-19 disease, by a large international insurance organisation. I should also like to point out that we have recently supplied and installed a defibrillator at the workplace with a medical oxygen supply system. Moreover, in a miniature of our daily life in the office you will see our proprietary cafeteria, which prepares free meals and beverages for everyone throughout the company’s operation.

SK NAYS Noe 2020 2 640x904 1

Nafs: There are not few who expect the demand for maritime equipment to peak in the first half of 2021. If these estimates are confirmed, how does C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. keep the lines of communication open with the shipping community so that it is ready to fight and seize every opportunity to be presented to it?

S.K.: In any crisis management like the one brought about by the pandemic the organisation and readiness to respond to the new facts play a key role. In shipping, in order to seize every opportunity presented, you must have your gauge full, implement a multifaceted policy. The targeted communication of the corporate profile of C&A STAVROS KASSIDIARIS SA as a reminder of its 42 years of experience in the shipping industry, the promotion of services and products digitally, the completeness and the organization of the warehouse, the well-tempered technical team and of course the coordination and direct service of the sales department are the weapons we have always used and especially now.

Nafs: If we want to give a description of the term “smart and safe ship” what would that be?

S.K. “Smart and safe ship” could be defined as an innovative ship designed and constructed based on new technologies which configures the design of its systems and its overall operation. Autonomy is also a feature of such a ship. Proper exploitation of new technologies can bring on board routes optimization, time saving, minimum fuel consumption, supervision of the performance of the ship’s basic infrastructure, automatic processing, and analysis of data on weather or obstacles on traveling, early identification of errors in engine and machine monitoring systems, as well as remedial instructions for example. In addition, all this information may be transmitted in real time to the office or to predetermined persons. Thus, after receiving data and using it correctly, achieved in the Industry 4.0 era, fuel savings can be achieved as well as preventive maintenance, which in many cases can be significant. In the long term, the creation of a “smart ship” environment, such as lower maintenance costs and more efficient systems, offers multiple benefits, leading shipping to move in this direction. Simultaneously, the “smart ship” has upgraded safety systems that are constantly being renewed and enriched by new regulations, aiming at its proper functioning, and achieving the presence of a safe environment for both the ship itself and staff and cargo.

Nafs: As a leader in the field of Automation and Electrical Installations in Shipping & Industry, do you think that challenging traditional approaches and developing advanced services for the benefit of your customers is one way?

S.K.: The absolute belief in traditional media or the absolute belief in the development of advanced services does not fit the philosophy of C&A STAVROS KASSIDARIS S.A. What is intertwined with it is the prioritizing on the customers’ needs and fully satisfying them effectively and immediately. We are exponents of evolution, adoption of new practices and implementation of new ideas, but I strongly believe that traditional approaches, the ones that continue to pay most over time, should not be omitted from the strategic plan of a company like ours.

S.Kassidiaris: We aim to innovation, outward-looking, new technologies

Despite the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company C&A Stavros Kassidiaris S.A. launches new partnership opportunities, innovative products, flexible services and new facilities. As Stavros Kassidiaris, the President of C&A Stavros Kassidiaris S.A., explains in his interview at Elnavi Magazine – October 2020 Issue: “The company manages in 2020 to implement every plan it launched for further development of its commercial and technical department”.

– What are the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on your shipbuilding activities?

It is a fact that the coronavirus was added to the list of the updates that have significantly affected the shipbuilding industry, along with the devaluation of the shipbuilding and repair zone of Perama and the closed shipyards. The main problem we were faced from the beginning of the pandemic is the relocation of our technicians to ships abroad, as well as the fact that many shipyards and shipping equipment companies have been closed for some time or continue to be under-operated. Simultaneously, the needs that arose in the ships accumulated due to the above had as a result the required service of many ships in a short period of time. This, for our company, was a challenge that we faced with timely and effective management which greatly made us achieve the satisfaction of our customers.

– Describe the comparative advantages and strengths of the shipbuilding sector in Greece?

The strategic geographical position of Greece next to the main arteries of maritime trade, but also the fact that it is the first European country to meet the ships passing through the Suez Canal can only be an important ace up the sleeve of Greek shipbuilding. The strengths of the domestic shipbuilding industry also include adequate infrastructure, high technology and know-how and a skilled workforce. At the same time, the shipbuilding sector in Greece has the largest customer in the world, which is none other than the Greek-owned fleet. I should also add that in recent years we have seen a continuous upward trend for the port of Piraeus, in the international ranking of the main shipping centers, as well as its increasing transport work. This is definitely an important advantage that should be taken advantage of by those involved in shipbuilding repair.

– Describe the CSR (corporate social responsibility) and environmental awareness activities of C&A group?

The philosophy of the C&A group is the pursuit of improving our financial position to go hand in hand with the well-being and dignity of employees, as well as with the protection of the environment. For our employees we have created a pleasant working environment, equal and with flexible working hours, where individual development and initiative are encouraged. Our goal is to provide opportunities for continuous improvement with seminars, workshops and safe work training to all staff. For this purpose, we participate in working groups with EKAB, while recently we proceeded to the purchase and installation of a defibrillator in our facilities. In addition, in recent years we have created a corporate canteen, which prepares free snacks and drinks for everyone. For our technicians traveling abroad we have taken care of and offer extra private insurance from a large international insurance organization. Moreover part of the company’s revenue is allocated to the purchase of modern equipment that optimizes working conditions and creates new jobs. In terms of external social responsibility, the company operates with respect to the environment and makes every effort not to burden it. It enhances the process of recycling paper, electrical appliances, batteries, packaging, etc., while promoting their frequent removal from the site by sending them to the competent management bodies. Also, our company supports in various ways the needs of schools in the area of Piraeus and sports teams, while it also participates in blood donation teams. SELECTRON S.A., a member of the C&A group, also decided to sponsor I.R. for the preventive protection from COVID-19 in various state services with the first delivery of 50 packages to the Navy. Finally, our company has been certified with ISO 9001: 2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001: 2015 (Environmental Management Systems), OHSAS 18001: 2007 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System).

– Have you collaborated with other organizations to enhance the competitiveness of the industry you represent?

From time to time, synergy efforts have been made with Academic Institutions and other companies in the industry, which would probably enhance the competitiveness of the industry and increase the level of services and products provided. However, such step in order to be successfully completed requires a specific timeline and long-term plan, team spirit, common goals, vision and certainly some institutional body to coordinate and succeed the project. Recently, on the occasion of the expected armament programs of the National Armed Forces, our company is in contact with large construction companies abroad for cooperation and maximization of the compensatory benefits for the Greek economy. We are also in close cooperation with GEETHA for the drafting of technical specifications of equipment and systems. Here I must congratulate the work of the GDAEE (General Directorate of Defense Equipment) of the Ministry of National Defense as well as the SEKPY (Association of Defense Material Manufacturers) that seeks to strengthen the domestic Defense Industry. Finally, I would like to note that our company is a registered manufacturer of defense equipment with code N-CAGE: G2426 and a registered NATO contractor with code code CONFIDENTIAL FORMATION No. 4998.

– What are the problems and challenges you face? Will the reopening of the Elefsina and Skaramaga shipyards benefit the shipbuilding industry?

The reopening of the historic Skaramaga and Elefsina shipyards will be a positive development for the industry. It comes to remind in practice the high know-how of the human resources of the Greek shipbuilding and repair zone, opens their turnover with projects related to ships, beyond the Navy, dynamically returns Greece to the forefront as a center of shipbuilding and maintenance, setting aside its recent Turkey, which after the closure of the two Greek shipyards was the only economic choice in the region. The cost of Greek services in the industry may be more expensive, compared to the neighboring country, but the highest quality services and the highest quality products in Greece are undeniable, which gives us an advantage in value for money and makes us the first choice in the Mediterranean. Therefore, the positive development that is expected in shipping companies like ours is easy to understand.

– What are the prospects for the production of maritime equipment in Greece, given the conditions of international protectionism and high taxation? What are your future plans?

The production of maritime equipment in Greece, which also includes installation and maintenance services on ships, demands a high level of expertise, technology, and experience. This inherently requires recognition and the ability to adapt to competitive international pricing.
Despite the strengths of Greek companies in manufacturing electromechanical equipment, several challenges remain. Strong protectionist policies in Asian countries—which heavily subsidize shipbuilding—combined with the limited availability of low-interest financing for Greek businesses, make it difficult to penetrate these maritime markets. These are two major obstacles we need to overcome.
Additionally, our businesses face significant hurdles due to high taxes, steep social security contributions, and the bureaucratic red tape we encounter at every turn. That said, our group of companies has already supplied several dozen automation systems for newbuildings, thanks largely to the trust our clients place in us.
In my view, to become more competitive and to make a stronger push into key maritime markets like Asia, we must smartly leverage Greece’s long-standing tradition in international shipping. We should also establish hubs of companies that specialize in maritime equipment production, place greater emphasis on specialized knowledge, new technologies, and innovation, and focus on expanding our global reach. Only by doing so can Greek maritime equipment production achieve sustained growth under the current conditions.

In implementing our plans, we naturally couldn’t ignore the challenges we’re all facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve always believed that, just as in every crisis, new opportunities for growth can emerge—whether through innovative products, more modern and flexible services, or new facilities equipped to support production and support operations.
I’m therefore pleased to announce that, throughout 2020, our company successfully set sail and continued to carry out every plan we had initiated. We’ve established new partnerships with international maritime equipment manufacturers, expanded our customer base by entering markets and countries we previously hadn’t reached, and increased our presence in digital shipping.
We now offer our customers the ability to quickly and easily obtain the materials they need through our e-shop (shop.kassidiaris.gr), we’re strengthening our Research & Development department for new products, and we’ve recently purchased land for the construction of new facilities for our group. These facilities will support the further development of our commercial and technical divisions and create new jobs in the near future.

C&A group as a gold sponsor at the virtual Meeting of Marine Technology 2020

C&A STAVROS KASIDIARIS S.A. took part at the Annual Meeting of Marine Technology 2020, which this year was organized virtually on December 2 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. as a gold sponsor.

The topic that presented this year by Nikolaos Bezentes, MSc Electrical and Computer Engineer, NTUA, representative of the technical department of the company, was the product ACCOMOS ® Acceleration Monitoring System of the company SCHALLER AUTOMATION for diesel engines gas and dual fuel.

ACCOMOS ® is a system that records vibrations and quakes generated during the operation of machines. It is quite small, fits in the palm of the one hand, is designed for easy and quick installation due to its strong magnetic plate.

CA group Synedrio Nautikis Texnologias 2020 dt 640x863 2

The idea of the system is to prevent and avoid significant damage to the machine. Essentially the system warns the user when it detects accelerations outside of the limits. In this way, the appropriate actions are performed and serious mechanical damage is avoided.

With the ACCOMOS ® system we have:

  • Online monitoring of the condition of the machine.
  • PC connection via RS485 or Can Bus.
  • Simple installation with magnet in a few minutes.
  • Teach-in function, which automatically delimits the areas of good operation of the machine.

What are the advantages of using the ACCOMOS ® system?

  • The system does not prevent users from operating the machine under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
  • Easy recognition of the condition of the machine.
  • Warning and planning for maintenance needs.
  • Increase the productivity and reliability of the machine.

All the above lead to a significant reduction of the operating costs of the machines and in combination with the low cost of the device, making it necessary and advantageous to install the ACCOMOS ® system.

THE SCHALLER STORY:

History is experience and evolved know-how

In 1956, Schaller Automation started with a mission of ensuring the safety of people and machinery through precise and reliable oil mist detection.

Over 55,000 systems were and are in use worldwide in by now.

This allowed Schaller Automation to build up an unparalleled expertise which is appreciated by customers and partners throughout the world.

The success of Schaller Automation is the result of the strengths of the Visatron product family:

  • From the outset, Schaller oil mist detectors were designed to function throughout the life of the engine without complicated maintenance.
  • The system precludes false alarms.
  • The system meets all common vibration standards of the classification society.

Its engineers are continuously developing the Schaller products to ensure that customer requirements can be met as individually as possible.

Stavros Kasidiaris: 40 years of innovation and evolving with the shipping industry

His decision to leave a secure career at the Public Power Corporation (DEI) to enter the field of marine automation proved to be a turning point in his successful journey in the shipping industry. Stavros Kasidiaris, Chairman of C&A STAVROS KASIDIARIS S.A., founded his company in 1978 and has since collaborated with virtually all shipping companies, shipyards, major industrial firms, as well as the Hellenic Navy. In this account, Stavros Kasidiaris reflects on the key milestones of his career and shares the principles and values that have guided him in the maritime world.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in the shipping industry?
My career began many years ago at the Public Power Corporation (DEI), where I gained valuable experience working at power plants and substations. I had the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding colleagues in a creative environment full of career prospects. However, my love for the sea eventually drew me to the shipping industry. It’s a fascinating and merit-based field—one that I fully dedicated myself to. There, I had the privilege of meeting and working with remarkable people from all professional levels, to whom I owe much of what I have achieved to this day.

– Which aspects of your character and temperament have shaped your path in the shipping industry (instinct, consistency, effectiveness, or others)?

I believe that every person’s professional journey is shaped by many aspects of their character. My decision to leave a stable job and promising career at the Public Power Corporation (DEI) and start from scratch was largely due to my young age at the time—and the fact that I had no major responsibilities yet. As for the rest, I believe they’re part of my DNA. I’m a hard worker, I take bold decisions, and I’ve always been consistent in meeting my commitments.

– Today, the shipping industry faces many challenges, including disruptive technologies and new environmental regulations. Can a young person still build a remarkable career in shipping based on their own merit?

I’ll refer to a quote by Darwin: “It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive, but those who can best adapt to change.” Taking that as a guiding principle—and considering that today’s younger generation has the full package (a strong academic background, technical knowledge, fresh ideas and enthusiasm, and direct engagement with evolving technologies and regulations)—I truly believe that someone just entering the industry can carve out their own path and build a brilliant career in shipping.

Oil & Gas : Protect petroleum workers from radioactive material with personal dosimeter

The oil and gas industry is responsible for releasing radioactive materials through its extraction, drilling, fracking, and production activities. Oil and gas production involves the use of various types of radiation, including gamma rays, x-rays, and neutrons. Some of these emissions are potentially dangerous to human health and the environment. Electronic personal dosimeters are used to properly monitor workers’ exposure to radioactivity.

In this article, we will discuss the sources of radioactive emissions in oil and gas production and how they are monitored. We will also look at some of the safety measures that are in place to protect workers from exposure to these harmful emissions.

Oil & Gas Industry and Radiation Exposure

Oil & Gas Industry and Radiation ExposureThe oil and gas industry is always looking for ways to improve efficiency while maintaining a high standard of safety, regardless of the harsh climate conditions and environmental challenges. The oil and gas industry has several sectors, which include the construction, exploration, production, downstream, and marketing sectors: the construction sector is responsible for manufacturing and fabricating facilities and equipment, the exploration sector is responsible for finding and evaluating new resources, and the production sector is responsible for developing and exploiting commercially viable oil and gas fields.

Even though petroleum and oil exploration have usually been associated with the bi-product of combustion contaminants, such as CO2 or greenhouse gases (GHGs), it is often forgotten that these same processes can expose many workers to radiation. Those who live near oil exploration and processing facilities may be at risk of exposure to potential radiation through radioactive substances and may be vulnerable to the harmful effects of radiation.Strict controls must be implemented to protect both workers and the general public from harmful radiation exposure as well as radioactive waste or chemical hazardous waste. Oil and gas companies are highly reliant on specialized service and supply companies to provide the necessary equipment and expertise like rt inspection (Radiographic Testing) which includes radiation safety.

The Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) is responsible within the organization for the supervision of work involving ionizing radiation.

How to avoid equipment degradation and instrumentation failures in urea plants?

a major challenge for urea production sites

The high temperatures and pressures, corrosion and crystallisation inherent in the urea manufacturing process can put a strain on even the most reliable pressure measurement equipment and quickly render it inoperative.

In this article, learn about a diaphragm seal that is strong enough to protect relative, absolute and differential pressure transmitters from the the harsh environments encountered in urea fertilizer production.

The third agricultural revolution will not be possible without the use of fertilisers.

The-third-agricultural-revolutionProducing more is becoming essential, while agricultural land is shrinking.

Organic farming dreamed of chemical-free crops that would preserve our health and our environment. Today, the dream of the 1980s is coming up against the reality of the soil: without help, the land is depleted.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that food production will have to increase by 70% to feed the additional 2.3 billion people on our planet by 2050. At the same time, the area of cultivated land is constantly decreasing.

Cultivated agricultural land accounted for 5 billion hectares worldwide. But every year, more than 3 million hectares are severely degraded.

Today, nearly 5 million hectars of our arable land are lost yearly.
