C&A Group | New, fast, and cost-effective supply of certified cables for ships

Following its successful track record in supplying high-quality marine cables in Asia through its exclusive partner, Jiangsu Honest Cable, since 2019, C&A STAVROS KASIDIARIS S.A. has established new facilities in Piraeus. These facilities enable the company to supply certified cables to its clients across all European—and broader Mediterranean ports quickly and with minimal transportation costs.

These are armored power, signal, and telecommunications cables, fully certified by internationally recognized classification societies such as ABS, DNV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s Register, RINA, Germanischer Lloyd, ClassNK, the Polish Register of Shipping, the Registro Italiano Navale, and the American Bureau of Shipping. They are ideal for use in new shipbuilding and yacht construction, repair projects, and the installation of new systems.

The decision to establish the new facilities and offer modern services was driven by growing customer demand. For over 40 years, clients have trusted the company for its high-quality products and services, relying on it to supply their vessels with certified cables at these key ports.

New specialty in the shipping industry “Marine Automation Engineer”

New specialty in the shipping industry “Marine Automation Engineer”

Mr. Stratos Karounias, General Manager of C&A STAVROS KASSIDIARIS S.A., discusses the importance of maritime automation and the need to establish the new specialty of maritime automation technician in an interview given to the program “Industry Hour” on the TpressWEBTV online channel.

“A ship is more than just a large and complex factory. It consists of dozens of automated systems, such as power generation and management, navigation and steering systems, engine control, cargo stabilization, safety systems, emissions control systems, and more. All of these must operate flawlessly to ensure the smooth functioning of the vessel. With the maritime industry adapting to new technologies and implementing advanced systems, it is now possible to predict potential malfunctions, something especially important, as it can prevent damage and delays that would otherwise come at a significant financial cost,” emphasizes Mr. Stratos Karounias.

Autonomous ships are indeed the next major milestone for the maritime industry. However, in order for this vision to become a reality, significant progress must be made in designing highly reliable systems—a transition that could take up to 20 years of continuous research and development.
“A modern or autonomous vessel also requires the introduction of new specialized roles, such as that of the maritime automation technician, which is essential for ensuring optimal operation,” added Mr. Karounias.
“We congratulate the Public IEK of Aigaleo for taking the initiative to introduce this new specialty, and we remain strong supporters of the effort to train the next generation of maritime automation experts.”

New milestone for Suedlink project: cable
production started at French plant

Prysmian Powerlink CCO D. Waimann: “With 1,200 km of hvdc underground cable, we are advancing the energy transition in Germany and Europe”

MILAN, ITALY – 10/14/2022 – 10:52 AM

With the start of cable production at Prysmian Group, SuedLink, the largest infrastructure project of the energy transition in Germany with a length of around 700 kilometres and 4 GW of transmission capacity, has reached another milestone. Prysmian started the production of a ±525 kV HVDC underground cable system at its French plant in Montereau, which allows a transmittable power of 2 gigawatts on a single system.

The transmission system operators TransnetBW GmbH and TenneT TSO GmbH have commissioned the globally operating cable manufacturer based in Milan to plan, manufacture, deliver and install a 580 km section of SuedLink. It connects Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein via the north-west of Hamburg to the southern connection point in Bergrheinfeld near Schweinfurt in Bavaria. The two transmission system operators have awarded the cable supplies for SuedLink in two lots for their respective areas of responsibility. For the connection from Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein to Leingarten in Baden-Württemberg the company NKT is in charge.

Space-saving installation with high transmittable power

The ±525 kV underground cables for SuedLink are designed with large conductor cross-sections for high transmittable power over long distances. A particular advantage is minimized space consumption – the ±525 kV technology allows a reduced amount of cable to transmit the same power compared to 320 kV systems, for example. This means less construction effort is required when installing the system, including trench widths.

“We are pleased to now produce a first significant part of the large cable volumes that will drive the energy transition in Germany and Europe over the next few years,” explains Detlev Waimann, CCO Prysmian Powerlink. “Through parallel, early production in several European plants, we can – in coordination with the transmission system operators – optimize the future project processes.”

Replacement of Air Circuit Breakers on Hellenic Navy vessels

Replacement of Air Circuit Breakers on Hellenic Navy vessels

Overview

Several Hellenic Navy vessels, built prior to the year 2000, were experiencing issues with their electrical panels.

Specifically, the generator air circuit breakers (ACBs) manufactured by SIEMENS, with which the vessels were originally equipped, are now out of production and no longer supported with spare parts.

The situation was being managed through frequent improvised and unreliable repairs.

The Hellenic Navy launched a series of tenders for their replacement, but these efforts yielded no results.

Approach

C&A STAVROS KASSIDIARIS S.A., certified by the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence and NATO for Defence Industry Projects, provided a solution to the impasse by undertaking the supply, installation, wiring, and full commissioning of new air circuit breakers of equivalent capacity to the original ones. The new breakers were manufactured by HYUNDAI ELECTRIC, which the company exclusively represents in Greece.

The work was completed within the scheduled timeframe and without affecting the operational readiness of the vessels.

Similar replacement projects, involving the substitution of outdated circuit breakers with breakers from HYUNDAI ELECTRIC, have also been carried out for other brands of electrical equipment whose products are no longer supported or have excessively long delivery times. In addition to the Hellenic Navy, such installations have also been successfully implemented on vessels in the deep-sea shipping sector.

The C&A Group holds the largest inventory of HYUNDAI ELECTRIC air circuit breakers in Europe and offers full technical support 24/7.

Reconstruction work on a Bulk Carrier

C&A Stavros Kassidiaris S.A. has recently carried out a reconstruction project on a Bulk Carrier

Background: Before the repair, the vessel had experienced water ingress in two of the three engine room levels, rendering it inoperative.

With many years of experience in the design and manufacturing of electronic, electrical, and pneumatic automation systems—from research and development to final production. C&A Stavros Kassidiaris S.A. undertook all necessary actions for the replacement and addition of new equipment, as well as the overall completion of the project.

The following tasks were carried out to restore proper operation:

  • Removal of the old and installation of a new 200-point Alarm Monitoring System (AMS) (main engine, generators, etc.) featuring Siemens PLC hardware and display screens (HMI) installed in the Engine Control Room (ECR) and Wheelhouse (W/H).
  • Construction and installation of a new panel for the Maneuvering System.
  • Replacement of the Fire Alarm System and Water Mist System using Tyco equipment. Additionally, construction of various engine room panels.

The work lasted approximately eight months, and the vessel was delivered fully operational.
