The topic that presented this year by Nikolaos Bezentes, MSc Electrical and Computer Engineer, NTUA, representative of the technical department of the company, was the product ACCOMOS ® Acceleration Monitoring System of the company SCHALLER AUTOMATION for diesel engines gas and dual fuel.

ACCOMOS ® is a system that records vibrations and quakes generated during the operation of machines. It is quite small, fits in the palm of the one hand, is designed for easy and quick installation due to its strong magnetic plate.

CA group Synedrio Nautikis Texnologias 2020 dt 640x863 2

The idea of the system is to prevent and avoid significant damage to the machine. Essentially the system warns the user when it detects accelerations outside of the limits. In this way, the appropriate actions are performed and serious mechanical damage is avoided.

With the ACCOMOS ® system we have:

  • Online monitoring of the condition of the machine.
  • PC connection via RS485 or Can Bus.
  • Simple installation with magnet in a few minutes.
  • Teach-in function, which automatically delimits the areas of good operation of the machine.

What are the advantages of using the ACCOMOS ® system?

  • The system does not prevent users from operating the machine under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
  • Easy recognition of the condition of the machine.
  • Warning and planning for maintenance needs.
  • Increase the productivity and reliability of the machine.

All the above lead to a significant reduction of the operating costs of the machines and in combination with the low cost of the device, making it necessary and advantageous to install the ACCOMOS ® system.

Σταύρος Κασιδάρης Πρόεδρος CA STAVROS KASSIDIARIS S.A

Stavros Kasidiaris: 40 years of innovation and evolving with the shipping industry

His decision to leave a secure career at the Public Power Corporation (DEI) to enter the field of marine automation proved to be a turning point in his successful journey in the shipping industry. Stavros Kasidiaris, Chairman of C&A STAVROS KASIDIARIS S.A., founded his company in 1978 and has since collaborated with virtually all shipping companies, shipyards, major industrial firms, as well as the Hellenic Navy. In this account, Stavros Kasidiaris reflects on the key milestones of his career and shares the principles and values that have guided him in the maritime world.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in the shipping industry?
My career began many years ago at the Public Power Corporation (DEI), where I gained valuable experience working at power plants and substations. I had the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding colleagues in a creative environment full of career prospects. However, my love for the sea eventually drew me to the shipping industry. It’s a fascinating and merit-based field—one that I fully dedicated myself to. There, I had the privilege of meeting and working with remarkable people from all professional levels, to whom I owe much of what I have achieved to this day.

– Which aspects of your character and temperament have shaped your path in the shipping industry (instinct, consistency, effectiveness, or others)?

I believe that every person’s professional journey is shaped by many aspects of their character. My decision to leave a stable job and promising career at the Public Power Corporation (DEI) and start from scratch was largely due to my young age at the time—and the fact that I had no major responsibilities yet. As for the rest, I believe they’re part of my DNA. I’m a hard worker, I take bold decisions, and I’ve always been consistent in meeting my commitments.

– Today, the shipping industry faces many challenges, including disruptive technologies and new environmental regulations. Can a young person still build a remarkable career in shipping based on their own merit?

I’ll refer to a quote by Darwin: “It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive, but those who can best adapt to change.” Taking that as a guiding principle—and considering that today’s younger generation has the full package (a strong academic background, technical knowledge, fresh ideas and enthusiasm, and direct engagement with evolving technologies and regulations)—I truly believe that someone just entering the industry can carve out their own path and build a brilliant career in shipping.

Oil & Gas : Protect petroleum workers from radioactive material with personal dosimeter

The oil and gas industry is responsible for releasing radioactive materials through its extraction, drilling, fracking, and production activities. Oil and gas production involves the use of various types of radiation, including gamma rays, x-rays, and neutrons. Some of these emissions are potentially dangerous to human health and the environment. Electronic personal dosimeters are used to properly monitor workers’ exposure to radioactivity.

In this article, we will discuss the sources of radioactive emissions in oil and gas production and how they are monitored. We will also look at some of the safety measures that are in place to protect workers from exposure to these harmful emissions.

Oil & Gas Industry and Radiation Exposure

Oil & Gas Industry and Radiation ExposureThe oil and gas industry is always looking for ways to improve efficiency while maintaining a high standard of safety, regardless of the harsh climate conditions and environmental challenges. The oil and gas industry has several sectors, which include the construction, exploration, production, downstream, and marketing sectors: the construction sector is responsible for manufacturing and fabricating facilities and equipment, the exploration sector is responsible for finding and evaluating new resources, and the production sector is responsible for developing and exploiting commercially viable oil and gas fields.

Even though petroleum and oil exploration have usually been associated with the bi-product of combustion contaminants, such as CO2 or greenhouse gases (GHGs), it is often forgotten that these same processes can expose many workers to radiation. Those who live near oil exploration and processing facilities may be at risk of exposure to potential radiation through radioactive substances and may be vulnerable to the harmful effects of radiation.Strict controls must be implemented to protect both workers and the general public from harmful radiation exposure as well as radioactive waste or chemical hazardous waste. Oil and gas companies are highly reliant on specialized service and supply companies to provide the necessary equipment and expertise like rt inspection (Radiographic Testing) which includes radiation safety.

The Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) is responsible within the organization for the supervision of work involving ionizing radiation.

REEFER MAX The solution for the refrigerated goods transportation front 2.2

REEFER MAX | The solution for the transport
of refrigerated goods by ship

As the global demand for refrigerated goods transport continues to rise, the shipping industry requires new practices to manage the increase in freight volume. The project ‘REEFER MAX’ was recently completed by the technical department of C&A Stavros Kasidiaris S.A., providing a solution to this need.

Specifically, ‘REEFER MAX’ refers to a container ship that maintains the cargo inside the refrigerated containers (reefer containers) at the proper temperature, in accordance with the strict specifications of the charterer. Typically, perishable products such as fruits, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy, flowers, and pharmaceuticals are transported inside the refrigerated containers. Special positions in the hold and on the deck of the ship are equipped with the appropriate power supply and sufficient ventilation space for the cooling compressor. These positions are predetermined before the loading of the ship and are included in the general loading plan followed at each port.

The Beginning of the Project
The project began with a fleet of six container ships, each designed to carry 6700 TEU. During the initial construction and design phase, the ships were equipped with an additional 1200 reefer container slots, both on the deck and in the hold. Upon completion of the project, the number of slots increased by 35%, bringing the total capacity to over 1600 reefer container slots

The First Stage of the Project
The project planning began with a review of the ship’s electrical schematics, ensuring that the new slots could be safely integrated into the ships’ electrical network. All relevant studies, such as the load analysis and short-circuit calculations, were submitted and approved by the appropriate classification societies and certification bodies. According to the ventilation study, additional electric ventilators had to be installed in the cargo areas to increase airflow, providing sufficient ventilation for the higher number of refrigeration units.

The Second Stage of the Project
In the second stage of the project, the electrical panels, which had already been manufactured by our technicians, were installed at predetermined locations on the ship. New wiring was also laid to connect the old panels to the new ones and the additional reefer sockets. During the same period, new ventilators were installed in the holds, along with a new remote control panel in the Control Room, allowing the ship’s crew to remotely manage both the new and existing ventilators.

Refcon System Upgrade
After the installation work was completed, the existing remote monitoring system for the status of the reefer containers was upgraded to allow the new containers to be connected as well. Following the upgrade, the crew has access to all information regarding the reefer containers, such as the loading and unloading ports, temperature curves, and more. This enables the crew to provide, upon request, real-time information about the cargo to the container’s owner.

Project Completion
The project was completed in approximately 120 days at the Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China. The following were required for the execution of the project:

  • 75 days for the construction of 80 electrical panels.
  • More than 60 kilometers of newly installed power cables (ranging from 3x5mm² to 3x120mm²).
  • 35 days for the installation on each ship at the shipyard.
  • 40 workers – technicians per day
